Nanowrimo Novel – Vessel of Souls

Its only 8 days until Nanowrimo officially kicks off, so I wanted to share with you the idea my novel Vessel of Souls will be based around. This has been kicking around in my head since 2004. Has it really been a decade? Talk about your idea gestational period! I wouldn’t have realized how old this was if I hadn’t drawn this picture and written the poem below around the idea:

Deep within the chamber lies
An empty girl with empty eyes
She sits upon an empty throne
In the dark, all alone

She’ll guard a land of war and strife
For all of her empty life
She watches as men’s lives are lost
And tallies up their empty cost

And deep within her empty shell
Lies the thrice damned gate to hell
This she guards with empty might
Hides from all mortal sight

Her magic runs wide and deep
And deep within her spirit sleeps
So that every empty day
She might keep evil at bay

Fate awaits us all in turn
The wicked are sure to burn
So men from every land bow down
And kiss the empty princess’ gown

Intriguing? Terrible? Maybe. All I know is it won’t get out of my head, so I’m going to tackle this in the month of November. Wish me luck on 50,000!

Writing Prompts!

I am listening to some really epic and stirring music on Pandora right now, so forgive me if some of these writing prompts seem a bit dark. I’m going to list a few lines that just come to mind, and will be writing a short story around them. Keep in mind, while some of the sentences are strung together, they aren’t a paragraph, just lines that may be used in the stories.

Fingers tightening around the lock of hair, she gazed into the roiling waves. Her knuckles were as white as the ocean froth, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

Her flesh was as cold as the merciless waves, and her eyes were frosted with ice. With the sailor’s knife, the siren cut her binding. Her heart sang as she felt the sand under her feet for the first time in her life. Oh, the chaos she will wreak.

In spite of the dagger in Gerald’s hand, he knew he was about to die.

Hands on her knees, Isande strained for the smallest sound. It was hard to hear anything over her panting breaths, and  the desperate pounding of her heart.

Saeryne trailed her fingers through the blood of Father Darius and laughed.

Come back soon to read a story based off one of these prompts. Join me if you dare! I’d love to read what you come up with.

The Jouney Begins

Sarah Dickson

Sarah Dickson

Hi there. My name is Sarah, and I want to be a writer. You probably already know this about me, otherwise you wouldn’t have found your way to my blog. First of all, thanks for reading. Right now there isn’t a lot to look at. In future visits you may find short stories, writing prompts, idea snippets, scenes from my developing novel, progress reports on my first Nanowrimo challenge, and miscellaneous ramblings from the depths of my weird brain.

Up to this point, I’ve invested time in the pursuit of my dream to be a published novelist. A lot of time. Time spent writing, reading, studying, dreaming, analyzing, and agonizing… This blog represents the first monetary investment in that dream. As a single mother, investing both time and money is a pretty big commitment. But if you know me, you know I’m all in.

I hope you’ll follow me on my journey. There is a long road ahead of me, and I could sure use the company.
